"Do something that scares you every day."
How many times have we heard that or seen it it some inspirational graphic on Facebook or Instagram?
We all click "like", right? Sure! It sounds great!
How many of us actually DO it?
I think the percentage of people that "like" posts like that, compared to the percentage of people who actually follow through is probably vastly different.
Let's face it - anxiety isn't fun. A lot of us love a great adrenaline rush (the "GOOD SCARED"), but who really likes anxiety? For me, I lose my appetite, can't sleep, get nauseous, and so much more. It's not fun! I prefer to stick with speaking and roller coasters for my adrenaline rush.
I've wanted another tattoo for a long time now. A LONG time. I've had the idea for almost a year, but I've been too chicken. (I have a terribly low pain tolerance, hate needles, and consider myself a total wimp!!!)
A few weeks ago, I decided to make an appointment for my friend and I to get tattoos as part of her birthday weekend. That same day, I got an invitation to do my first radio interview to talk about my speaking (which also made me nervous).
Days leading up to My Big Day (yesterday), I pretended like I was super excited, and that stress didn't exist. I was trying to train my brain to not be scared.
Confession: I woke up yesterday with such a ginormous level of anxiety. I had nightmares about needles, and could barely even pay attention at church, I was so scared. I just wanted it over with, and was tempted at least 940385309484930 times to come up with a crafty excuse why I couldn't get my tattoo.
However, after talking to Kellie, Josh, Dad, Jeff and Missy, I knew I had to go through with it. I didn't want to let anyone down, but most importantly, I didn't want to let MYSELF down.
I was going to DO IT AFRAID.
Fast forward - I did it! I sucked it up, put my big-girl pants on, and was not a wimpy kid. (I know you super tattooed people are totally rolling your eyes right now, but it was a big deal for me!)
I was SO dang proud of myself, and left feeling on top of the world! I got a second dose of fear before my interview, but stared it in the face again, and had a great time on the show!!!
This morning I woke up super-charged to continue along like this. Continue seeking out opportunities to get eyeball to eyeball with fear and keep plowing forward.
Fear is a funny thing. It doesn't necessarily go away when you are anxious about something, EVEN if you know it's the right thing to do. The physical manifestations of fear can't be ignored or silenced. The only thing to do is DO IT AFRAID.
When you do something that reallllly scares you, it's rewarding! It unlocks another level of fulfillment in my opinion.
It may sound weird, but I actually LIKE going through experiences where I feel physical fear. Because I KNOWWW it's an opportunity for growth!!!
What is something you've REALLY wanted to do, but have been too afraid to take the plunge? Call a family member you haven't spoken to in a long time? Do it afraid. Say "I'm sorry?" Do it afraid. Maybe have a difficult conversation with someone? Do it afraid. Quit your job? Ask for a raise? Skydive? Get a tattoo? Book that vacation? There's a MILLION things it could be!
DO IT AFRAID!
I triple dog dare you to pick ONE thing you have anxiety about this week, and do it afraid! It will be uncomfortable, I promise. BUT - the feeling AFTERWARDS will be SOOOOOOOO worth all the discomfort you experienced when you were playing out the scenario in your head!!
